Arts Queensland Poetry Award winners announced
The Queensland Writers Centre (QWC) has announced the winners of this year’s Arts Queensland Poetry Awards.
The winners in each category are:
Oodgeroo Noonuccal Prize for Indigenous Poetry
Winner ($3500 and publication)
- Merinda Dutton for “amnesia”.
Runner-up ($500 and publication)
- Jada Alberts for “Bush Kid (don’t touch that)”.
Thomas Shapcott Poetry Prize for an Unpublished Manuscript
Winner ($5000 and publication with University of Queensland Press)
- Mindy Gill for “Confessions”.
Runner-up ($500)
- Sean West for “Disappearing Acts”.
Commended
- Vuong Pham for “Refugee Prayer”
- Killian MacDonald for “Boyfriend Material”.
Val Vallis Award for an Unpublished Poem
Winner ($3500, publication in Westerly)
- KA Rees for “Sleeping in the Water Column”.
Runner-up ($500, publication in Westerly)
- Nikki McCahon for “Yellow Bruises: An Ode to Dandelions”.
XYZ Prize for Spoken Word
Winner ($3500, publication with QWC)
- Serani for “Bouquet of Flowers”.
This year QWC significantly increased the value of each award. Presented on 5 December, the awards aim to “support, recognise and celebrate emerging and established poets”, said organisers.
