Contestable Fund recipients announced

In New Zealand Aotearoa, the Publishers Association of New Zealand/Te Rau o Tākupu (PANZ) has announced the recipients of the Copyright Licensing New Zealand Contestable Fund Grants.

Of the 59 applications received, the following 15 entrants were successful:

  • Moa Press, to publish the Airana Ngarewa short story collection ($3500)
  • Anne Bennett-Eustace, to write “Arthurs Memoirs and Legacy” ($6000)
  • Drama NZ Mahi Whakaari o Aotearoa, to write and publish resources for drama in education ($8000)
  • New Zealand Railway & Locomotive Society Incorporated, for writing and publishing of “New Zealand Railways at Night” ($5000)
  • One Tree House Limited, to publish two graphic novels in the series Hongi’s Hīkoi: A Trio of Travellers ($10,000)
  • Forest & Bird, to write “Bird of the Year: New Zealand’s love affair with native birds” ($5000)
  • Small Press Fest, for a literary festival ($2500)
  • Mairātea Mohi, Craccum Magazine, for writing and publishing of Craccum Magazine ($5000)
  • Mani Malaeulu, Empowerment Training Ltd, for writing and publishing of “Dear Uso” ($7000)
  • Pacific Islanders in Publishing, to publish Pacific Islanders in Publishing ($4000)
  • Akaroa Community Arts Council (ACAC), for Readers and Writers Akaroa fellowships ($5000)
  • Oratia Media, to publish New Zealand Place Names book and online collaboration ($4500)
  • Dunedin Writers and Readers Festival, for Dunedin Writers & Readers Festival podcasts ($2490)
  • Shana Chandra, for writing and publishing of “Banjara” ($2000)
  • Beyond Reality Media, for writing and publishing of “The Irrepressible Duncans Universe” ($5000).

The selection panel included Tony Fisk, Abby Aitcheson, Anne de Latour and Kim Harris.

Aitcheson said, “I was particularly pleased to see so many initiatives that sit decidedly outside of traditional, mainstream publishing – there’s room in this industry for more alternative, innovative ideas that uplift, empower, and amplify. It is a privilege to be on this panel and to gain some insight into the way Aotearoa publishing continues to evolve.”
