Margaret and Colin Roderick Literary Award 2026 shortlist announced

The Foundation for Australian Literary Studies (FALS) has announced the shortlist for the 2026 Margaret and Colin Roderick Literary Award, worth $50,000.

The shortlisted titles, chosen from 14 longlisted titles and almost 250 entries, are:

  • The Rot (Evelyn Araluen, University of Queensland Press)
  • Spirit of the Crocodile (Aaron Fa’Aoso & Michelle Scott Tucker with Lyn White, Allen & Unwin)
  • Tiwi in Paris (Glen Farmer Illortaminni, Thames & Hudson)
  • Apron-Sorrow / Sovereign-Tea (Natalie Harkin, Wakefield Press)
  • What Kept You? (Raaza Jamshed, Giramondo)
  • Always Home, Always Homesick: A Memoir (Hannah Kent, Picador).

Founded in 1967, the award is named after James Cook University founding professor of English Colin Roderick, and his wife, Margaret, who collaborated on his literary scholarship.

The award recognises the best original book published in Australia in the previous calendar year that deals with “any aspect of Australian life”.

The winner will be announced in September and will be presented with the HT Priestley Memorial Medal at a ceremony in Townsville.

The 2025 winner of the Roderick Literary Award was Khin Myint for Fragile Creatures: A Memoir (Black Inc.).
