2013 Tasmanian Literary Prizes finalists announced

The finalists for the 2013 Tasmanian Literary Prizes have been announced.

The shortlisted titles in each of the categories are:

Tasmania Book Prize ($25,000) for the best book with Tasmanian content

  • 1835: The Founding of Melbourne and the Conquest of Australia (James Boyce, Black Inc.)
  • This Woman (Adrienne Eberhard, Black Pepper)
  • Last Days of the Mill (Peter Hay & Tony Thorne, Forty Degrees South)
  • The Roving Party (Rohan Wilson, A&U)

 

Margaret Scott Prize ($5000) for the best book by a Tasmanian writer

  • 1835: The Founding of Melbourne and the Conquest of Australia (James Boyce, Black Inc.)
  • Pedder Dreaming: Olegas Truchanas and A Lost Tasmanian Wilderness (Natasha Cica, UQP)
  • Reading Madame Bovary (Amanda Lohrey, Black Inc.)
  • The Roving Party (Rohan Wilson, A&U)

 

University of Tasmania Prize ($5000) for the best unpublished literary work by an emerging Tasmanian writer

  • Kubla (Katherine Johnson)
  • Shadow in the Forest (Leigh Swinbourne)
  • Lurching (Ben Walter).

 

The winners of this year’s awards will be announced in Hobart on 22 March during the Ten Days on the Island festival. Members of the public can now also vote in the People’s Choice Awards, which will be awarded for the first time this year.

The Tasmanian Literary Prizes are presented biennially to recognise excellence in writing about Tasmania and by Tasmanian writers. The prizes are presented through a partnership between Arts Tasmania and the University of Tasmania, in association with Ten Days on the Island.
