Shortlists announced for James Tait Black prizes

In the UK, the shortlists for the James Tait Black prizes have been announced.
The shortlisted titles in each category are:
Fiction
- Bitter Orange Tree (Jokha Alharthi, trans by Marilyn Booth, Scribner)
- Demon Copperhead (Barbara Kingsolver, Faber)
- Bolla (Pajtim Statovci, trans by David Hackston, Faber)
- After Sappho (Selby Wynn Schwartz, Galley Beggar Press)
Biography
- Homesick (Jennifer Croft, Charco Press)
- A Line in the World: A year on the North Sea coast (Dorthe Nors, trans by Caroline Waight, Pushkin Press)
- Come Back in September: A literary education on West Sixty-Seventh Street, Manhattan (Darryl Pinckney, Riverrun)
- A History of Water: Being an account of a murder, an epic and two visions of global history (Edward Wilson-Lee, William Collins).
Founded in 1919, the James Tait Black Prizes are awarded annually by the University of Edinburgh and are judged by postgraduate students and senior academics at the university. Each winning author receives £10,000 (A$19,050).
The winners of last year’s prizes were Keith Ridgway and Amit Chaudhuri for fiction and biography respectively.
