Editor, Sydney

Echo Publishing

Echo Publishing, an imprint of Bonnier Books UK, is looking for an editor with a minimum of five years’ experience editing and project managing titles in a book publishing company to join us at an exciting time in our development. Echo publishes an Australian list of approximately 30 books a year, comprising quality commercial fiction and crossover literary fiction, as well as nonfiction titles.

This position offers a unique opportunity to work closely and collaboratively with all the members of our small team in the day-to-day operation of the company. We welcome diversity in our staff and are flexible in our working arrangements, but enjoy having the team in the office a minimum of two days a week.

The role of editor is a full-time position, based at Echo’s office in Summer Hill, in Sydney’s inner west.

Responsibilities include:

  • Working with the publishing manager to project manage books from delivered manuscript through to printer’s proofs, maintaining the highest editorial standards and ensuring that books are sent to print within budget and on schedule. The role will also include some hands-on editing, depending on workload.
  • Liaising with authors, freelance suppliers (e.g., editors, proofreaders, typesetters, and cover and layout designers) and printers.
  • Supporting the editorial requirements of the sales, marketing and publicity teams (e.g., preparing online and print catalogues).
  • Various other tasks, including clearing text and image permissions, and assisting with the upkeep of Echo Publishing’s databases, as required.

The applicant will be computer literate and have experience in editing in Microsoft Word. A working knowledge of InDesign would be an advantage.

The role requires strong communication, organisational and time-management skills, as well as attention to detail. Reflecting Echo’s core principles, the ability to communicate and collaborate respectfully and consistently with colleagues, authors and suppliers is key, as is a flexible and creative approach to the demands of the position.

Please send your CV and a covering letter by email to Diana Hill, publishing manager, diana.hill@echopublishing.com.au, with the subject line ‘Fulltime editor position June 2024’. The closing date for applications is 24 June 2024.
