Nakata Brophy Prize 2025 shortlist announced

Overland journal has announced the shortlist for the 2025 Nakata Brophy Prize for the best short story by a young Indigenous writer.

The shortlisted writers, selected by judges Mykaela Saunders and Evelyn Araluen, are:

  • Isabella Eichler-Onus for ‘PYROPHYTE’
  • Kimberly Lovegrove for ‘Holiday From Hell’
  • Kyrah Honner for ‘Country Keeps You’
  • Melissa Serrurier for ‘The Echo of Saltwater’
  • Susie Anderson for ‘the claimant’.

The winner, who receives $5000, publication in Overland, and an optional writing residency at Trinity College, will be announced in late October.

The Nakata Brophy Prize alternates between short fiction and poetry each year, with this year’s prize for the best short story by an Indigenous writer under 35.

The previous winner was Yasmin Smith for ‘Dawning in the Rivulet of My Father’s Mourning’.
