Harper wins Glass Bell Award for ‘The Wolf Den’

In the UK, Elodie Harper has won the £2000 (A$3390) Goldsboro Books Glass Bell Award for her novel The Wolf Den (Head of Zeus), reports the Bookseller.

Harper’s novel is the first in a trilogy re-imagining the lives of the women of Pompeii’s brothels. It follows Amara, a young woman sold into slavery by her mother, and sent to work at Pompeii’s brothel, who is determined to regain her freedom.

The judges described The Wolf Den as ‘rich and immersive’. ‘Harper brings to life the untold stories of the women enslaved in Pompeii’s most notorious brothel, powerfully exploring bonds of sisterhood as they navigate a brutal world without personal freedom,’ Goldsboro Books co-founder David Headley said.

The Wolf Den was chosen as the winner from a shortlist of six announced in July. Presented by London bookshop Goldsboro Books, the prize celebrates the best storytelling across all genres of contemporary fiction.

Last year’s winner was Clare Whitfield for her historical thriller People of Abandoned Character (Head of Zeus), a take on the Jack the Ripper story.
