Local author shortlisted in UK CrimeFest Awards

Aotearoa New Zealand author Tom Baragwanath has been shortlisted for the UK CrimeFest Debut Crime Novel Award for Paper Cage (Text).

Originally from Masterton in Aotearoa New Zealand, Baragwanath currently lives in Paris.

Paper Cage is set in Masterton and follows police records clerk Lorraine as she becomes involved in a search for local missing children.

The novel previously won the 2021 Michael Gifkins Prize for an Unpublished Novel. The next book in the series is Lucky Thing (Text), which is set for publication in September.

The full list of shortlisted titles for the festival’s Debut Crime Novel Award includes:

  • Paper Cage (Tom Baragwanath, Text)
  • Love Letters to a Serial Killer (Tasha Coryell, Orion)
  • The Antique Hunter’s Guide to Murder (C L Miller, Macmillan)
  • The Night of Baba Yaga (Akira Otani, trans by Sam Bett, Faber)
  • Nightwatching (Tracy Sierra, Penguin)
  • Five by Five (Claire Wilson, Michael Joseph).

The CrimeFest winners will be announced on 17 May, and the winner in the debut category will receive a prize of £1000 (A$2052).
