Charalambous novel republished with new TV tie-in title

John Charalambous’ 2006 novel Silent Parts (UQP) has been republished with the new title An Accidental Soldier ahead of an ABC TV film adaptation of the same name.

UQP publisher Madonna Duffy told Books+Publishing that UQP decided to use the film title ‘as it was an opportunity to refresh the novel and find a new audience for it’. The film’s artwork and the names of some of the cast are also featured on the cover.

‘There were only a few copies left of the original edition of the novel in our warehouse, so all queries to our distributor about this novel will be directed to the new book title and it has been sold in by our reps under the new title,’ said Duffy.

The film rights to Silent Parts, which was longlisted for the Miles Franklin Award in 2007, were optioned in 2007 to screenwriter Blake Ayshford. The film was subsequently commissioned and financed by the ABC and will screen on ABC TV on Sunday 15 September. The film is directed by Rachel Ward and stars Marie Bunel, Dan Spielman, Julia Zemiro and Brian Brown.
