New ‘Books+Publishing Junior’ reviews out now

Books+Publishing’s latest Junior newsletter contains eight reviews of children’s and YA books publishing in June 2016.

Jeannie Baker’s picture book about the migration of bar-tailed godwits, Circle (Walker Books), received five stars from reviewer Margaret Hamilton, who describes it as ‘yet another masterpiece from the creator of the award-winning Where the Forest Meets the Sea and Mirror’. Hamilton interviews the author about her unique mixed-media storytelling approach here.

Mrs Whitlam (Bruce Pascoe, Magabala) was close behind, scoring 4.5 stars. This story, about a young Aboriginal girl who joins the local pony club after being gifted a horse, ‘has plenty to satisfy any horse lover, but also deftly handles issues of race and privilege’, writes reviewer and childhood horse lover Angela Crocombe.
