Fitzcarraldo Editions Essay Prize 2025 shortlist announced
In the UK and Ireland, the 2025 Fitzcarraldo Editions/Mahler & LeWitt Studios Essay Prize shortlist has been announced.
Judges – Joanna Biggs, Brian Dillon, Sheila Heti, Joanna Kavenna and Jacques Testard – shortlisted six essayists from 119 entries. Shortlistees are:
- Phoebe Braithwaite for ‘Tesserae’
- Cassandre Greenberg for ‘My Great Novel’
- Sarai Kirshner for ‘On Refusal’
- Hana Loftus for ‘Crapes’
- Abhinav Ullal for ‘Gully Cricket’
- Claire Wilmot for ‘Show Us the Body’.
The prize is awarded annually to an unpublished resident of the UK or Ireland with a proposal for a book-length essay (minimum 25,000 words). ‘[The judges look for] essays that explore and expand the possibilities of the essay form, with no restrictions on theme or subject matter,’ said organisers.
The winner will receive £4,000 (A$8,375), a three-month residency in Italy, and publication with Fitzcarraldo Editions.
Last year’s winner was Lucy Mercer for Afterlife.
